Learn 16 heart and lung findings from 344 recordings. Then practise with the waveform, quiz yourself level by level, and review the ones you missed.
Use headphones. Phone and laptop speakers cannot play the lowest sounds, such as S3, S4 and diastolic rumbles.
About the recordings. They come from a clinical teaching manikin, recorded with a digital stethoscope: clean and clearly labelled, which suits learning each sound. Real patients are noisier, so practise on real chests too.
How to train your ear
- Learn the normal sound first. Every abnormal sound is a change from normal: an extra sound, a noise in a pause, or a change in rhythm.
- Listen for one thing at a time. First S1 and S2, then systole, then diastole. With breath sounds, inspiration first, then expiration.
- Compare after every mistake. Play your answer and the right answer one after the other. That comparison is what trains the ear.
- Short and often. One quiz round a day works better than one long session. Review clears the ones you missed.
